Summary

Greater San Diego Muslim Community Center (GSDMCC) is seeking an in-house Resident Scholar with energetic and inspiring leadership skills, knowledge of Fiqh, experience and vision to provide religious guidance to the greater Muslim community of San Diego. The Resident Scholar will report to the Religious Services Director and will serve as the spiritual guide of GSDMCC according to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Mohammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him). In conjunction with the Imam and the Religious Services Director, the resident scholar will play a critical role in guiding and educating the members of our community of all ages.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Religious and Spiritual Guidance for Community
    • Engage the community, reach out and build relationships with the many demographic groups (youth, students, young professionals, men, women, elders).
    • Da’wah and education to the Muslim community and community at large
    • Provide input to Islamic educational programs as requested by BOD in both structured (ex: classes, workshops) and non-structured (ex: post prayer reminders) settings.
    • Collaborate with the Imam and Religious Services Director to enhance current center services.
    • Contribute to Ramadan and Eid programs, and Jummah Khutba on a regular basis.
    • Develop programs focused on new reverts to Islam.
    • Maintain office hours and appointments to provide religious counsel and guidance.
  2. Youth Engagement:
    • Organize youth programs for both males and females which combine social activities with special focus on Quran, Islamic studies for various age groups (elementary-high school and college/young professionals).
    • Basic youth counseling services.
    • Support and lead a team of GSDMCC staff including the Imam and Youth Coordinator to engage in various youth projects.
    • Provide input to Youth Programs as requested by BOD.
    • Groom the next set of leaders by providing religious and leadership teachings to the youth and adults.
    • Able to interact with youth via social media.
  3. Administrative Responsibilities:
    • Provide input to BOD on administrative matters and community challenges as requested by BOD.
    • Attend Board of Directors meetings as necessary.
    • Participate in fundraising efforts for GSDMCC and planned center expansion.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Islamic Studies or related field from a higher education institution or be a graduate of a recognized Aalim and/or Mufti program or equivalent.
  • Trained in the core Islamic sciences through recognized academic Islamic institution(s).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Islamic creed, hadith and sunnah with the ability to apply it within an American context.
  • Memorization of a sizable portion of the Quran, with a fundamental understanding of Tafseer and Tajweed and training in basic Arabic language. Having Ijaza is desired.
  • Must communicate effectively through various means to a wide audience set within the community in written and spoken English language. Use of PowerPoint, video, etc. to communicate is required.
  • Strong familiarity with popular American culture, public ethics, history, and current affairs is required. The ability to connect through the knowledge of these means is necessary.
  • Ability to teach Islamic sciences and concepts to suit the needs of a diverse community.
  • Ability to interact and build bridges within a multi-ethnic multi-madhab Muslim community and should be inclusive and welcoming all major schools of thought.
  • Experience with organizing classes and youth activities with the ability to report status regularly on these tasks.

Summary

The Muslim Community Center (MCC) Facility’s Manager is responsible for the overall maintenance, safety, and functionality of the MCC’s physical facilities. This role ensures that the building and grounds are maintained in a manner that supports the organization’s mission, activities, and events. The Facilities Manager will oversee all aspects of facility operations, including building maintenance, security, vendor management, and compliance with safety regulations. Reporting to the Treasurer/Vice Chairperson the Facility Manager, will work closely with the Chairperdon and other portfolio Directors to support the diverse needs of MCC. The Facility Manager will also be responsible to manage and execute Security Grant funds which may also include Design and construction for which the Security Grant was received. The Facility Manager to also address and manage any Tenant Improvements needed by the Center and preparation of construction documents and process it through the Building Department.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules for all facility systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, extermination, and security systems.
  • Ensure that all areas of the facility are clean, safe, in good repair, and ready for MCC activities by promptly addressing any issues.
  • Oversee and manage the Security Grant funds, including associated design and construction, and process them through the San Diego City Building Department.

Event Support:

  • Collaborate with event organizers to provide facility-related support for community events, religious services, and educational programs.
  • Ensure MCC facilities are prepared for Jumma prayers, Ramadan events (including Taraweeh, Aitikaf, and Saturday community iftars) as directed by the Board of Directors (BOD).
  • Prepare facilities for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers and events.
  • Coordinate the setup, breakdown, and logistics for events, ensuring all facility needs are met.
  • Manage and schedule the use of MCC facilities, including booking spaces for events, classes, and meetings.

Budgeting & Financial Oversight:

  • Collaborate with the Treasurer to develop and manage the facilities budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Monitor and track approved expenses related to facility management, including maintenance, repairs, utilities, and supplies.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with external vendors and service providers to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure all vendor contracts comply with MCC requirements and adhere to organizational policies.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure that the MCC facility complies with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including fire safety, building codes, and health and safety standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, addressing any hazards or compliance issues.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures, including fire drills and evacuation plans that meet MCC operations needs.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities management, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Hands-on with excellent communication skills and the ability to conduct facilities-related initiatives (security, operations, permits, and licenses).

Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed and directed by the Board of Directors (BOD).
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of building systems, codes, maintenance practices, and safety regulations (preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse community.
  • Proficient in using facility management software and tools (preferred).
